What is photogrammetry ?
The principle of photogrammetry is quite simple in theory. It is a technique that allows to identify and analyze the dimensions, volumes and structure of 2D and 3D objects from measures taken in photographs. At the end of these measurements and analyzes, it is possible to determine the perspective of the objects photographed.
This technique can be applied from the ground or from the air, which is called aerial photogrammetry. It is increasingly used to capture information from a more or less large and complex environment. Aerial photogrammetry makes it possible to identify the relief and the structure of a more or less extensive area over a great distance by taking photos from several points of view in order to analyze and build a representation of space in the most reliable and true. It is an interesting reality capture method for 3D building information modeling (BIM), as point clouds and 3D models can be obtained from 3D surveys by photogrammetry. It is a technology conducive to the use of Scan To BIM.
How is it possible to build a 3D model from photos?
When using photogrammetry, the acquisition of 3D data of an environment is done through a simple photo sensor like those found on smartphones, cameras or drones. It works like humans and animal species vision. Our eyes focus on a specific area or object to identify the perspectives around us, colors and objects’ shapes in 3D. Vision also grants the ability to analyze a scene and anticipate an event fairly precisely. It works the same way for identifying information and data through photography.
The 3D model construction by image correlation consists in recognizing the homologous pixels on a determined and known surface. Image analysis allows to associate any point of a first image with a homologous point of a second image. The computer takes a stereoscopic vision of the scene and sets the relative position of each point. This process, reproduced multiple times, improve the calculation of pixels position and create a 3D model.
Are photogrammetry projects exploitable and analyzable on ATIS.cloud?
ATIS.cloud is a SaaS collaborative web platform allowing the processing and visualization of heavy point clouds and 3D data. This intelligent web application centralizes and secures 3D data where stakeholders of a project can work and collaborate.
ATIS.cloud provides users with advanced tools to exploit point clouds and share information without using your PC’s specification or duplicating data on a hard disk. The web application is totally designed to host data from all scans (land, mobile, drones).
It is completely possible to import, exploit and share your photogrammetry files with your team, especially since the ATIS team established a special offer dedicated to users who use this technology.
